How Depressing… Bud Select 55 Calorie Beer

Bud Select 55 Calorie

Does this mean we can stop calling it beer? Bud is responding to the popularity of MGD 64 by planning to roll out a 55 calorie Bud Select. Ad Age reports that Anheuser / Inbev even flirted with releasing more 55 calorie beers – they have label samples from Anhueser Light and Michelob Light, but it sounds like they are just going to stick to Bud Select. For now.

Mutineer Magazine echoes my thoughts, “At least PRETEND to care what’s in the can. I get it, marketing’s important, but it’s beer people. Not orange juice. Not water. It’s effing beer. If you have to, drink a beer with more than 55 calories and then go for a walk or something. Do yourself a favor.”

Test market cities include Cincinnati, Louisville, and Austin.

Been drinking it since February 2010 lost 33 pounds, Probably drink a few more of the 55's than my regular beer. but hey it works if you want to lose weight. Try having a regular beer or 2 when you drink it if you are looking for a buzz.... But lets face the majority of the time we are drinking to be social.

I HAVE BEEN DRINKING BUD SELECT 55 SINCE JAN 2010 INSTEAD OF BUD AND WITH SOME GREAT REWARDS BECAUSE I LOST 45.5 LBS.

All you beer connoisseurs can just shove it! Every beer dosen't have to taste like German beer!

Water this.. and water that... who gives a flip what you think? If you don't like it, don't drink it... find something else and quit spewing off like as if your tatse buds determine what makes a great beer! Your taste buds suit you just fine... they're not mine and I'm glad! Your taste for beer is different than mine!

Not everybody likes the strong beer tasting beer! I prefer Bud Ice Light and they've cancelled making it. So I'm frustrated and hating the world right now!

My husband and I tried it.....great taste, refreshing and great for the waste line....

haha, the "waste" line, i get it

It's another marketing gimmick by South Africa's Budweiser (yes, it's not american anymore). Sales are plunging for their regular beers, so why not try something different. I simply don't get it. With 2.4% abv, you have to drink twice as much to feel the effects. If you don't intend on getting drunk, i guess this is a good choice.

Worst beer I've ever tasted. If you can even call it beer.

I'm on weight watchers and love this beer. Sorry I don't care how many calories it is a beer is a beer. This beer is pretty good for the calorie intake. If you don't like it don't drink it. It's not for everyone but they are trying to market for more than one person and with as many people out there that are counting calories or some kind of diet this is a great option. So if you don't like it don't drink. Not everyone is going to like everything.

not everyone can go for a walk. I like a beer. I'm in a wheelchair so exercise is difficult and keeping weight down is difficult so I have to make sacrifices. I missed beer so when I visited the US it was a pleasure to be able to have a beer. It compares well with bud light and Michelob Ultra so I was pleased. Going to a BBQ or a pizza with friends, there feels like something is missing without an ice cold beer. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the beer and it made me feel quite decadent on holiday. I think that many men and women have to watch their calorie and carbohydrate intake and Bud select 55 helped me feel like things were normal and I could partake in things where having a couple of beers is normal ( and usuallly sorely missed) made me feel like life was good and enjoyable. It's often the little things that make a diffference. This little thing made things feel normal to me. It'l probably do the same for men and women who enjoy a beer and have to sacrifice it for the sake of calorie intake or weight management. I'm just a tourist who had the good fortune to discover it on my holiday to the US and it made the holiday feel like a proper holiday for me. I am writing this quite spontaneously and have no links whatsoever with the beer industry. Just sending out a meassage to all you beer lovers frustrated with having to sacrifice an ice cold beer when you fancy. cheers everyone.

I have tried MGD 64 and it tastes awful, I can't imagine how much worse 9 less calories tastes.

I really like Bud 55. Refreshing and it doesn't leave a nasty aftertaste in your mouth. It is not the beer to drink if you are trying to get drunk or buzzed, but if you want something light to quench your thirst, this is it! I tried Miller 64 but didn't like the taste even though I usually drink Miller Lite over Bud Light. This beer is great with food too.

actually I really like Bud 55. Had to get used to it. Very light but has a good taste and doesn't leave a nasty aftertaste. Refreshing. It is not the beer to drink if you are just trying to get drunk...but if you want a a nice change of pace and want to be able to drive home this may be for you. Goes great with food too.

We bought a case at our local small town station. My husband and I instantly loved it. We have been drinking mgd 64 for the low calories. He hated it. But loved the 55. Now we can't get our hands on it. And waiting for the actually release of it. It seemd to be a little bit more of a darker beer then the 64. The taste is much better. We will be switching for sure!
  • hanten
Hmmm... I still haven't had the chance to try it, but at 2.4% alcohol, I wonder why they don't just make a barley pop instead of "beer."
  • hanten
I'm not sure how the test markets have been going. Heard any updates? My distributor told me that there is no wide launch date planned yet.
  • liz
we have it in cape coral...its good...refreshing on a hot day
  • hanten
Are you drinking it at a bar or off-sale? How much did you pay? Have you had MGD 64?
