A Summer Drink: Osama Gin Laden

Here’s a poorly-named drink for you. The Osama Gin Laden comes from Libation Blog, but I’m going to modify their recipe since somebody over there thinks it’s a good idea to put carbonated Red Bull into a shaker. Don’t try that. They also post a picture of a blue drink, even though none of the ingredients are blue. I’ll fix that for you.
Here’s the modified Osama Gin Laden

An easy, refreshing recipe. The Ben Hanten

(use a smaller glass, or add more bourbon!)
I’m a big fan of a lot of different alcohol styles, especially beer, Scotch, bourbon, and, to a lesser extent, rum. That means most of my drinks are mixed with nothing at all; either a draft beer, or a cocktail that consists of nothing but Bourbon and ice. However, there are times where adding other ingredients takes your drink to another level (although it’s hard to beat what Oban and Knob Creek offer right out of the bottle). So here’s a very simple one for you.
- Fill a lowball with ice.
- Add 2 ounces of bourbon; use Jim Beam or better.
- Squeeze all the juice from half a lemon. No seeds, please.
- Squeeze all the juice from about 1/3 of an orange.
- Do not garnish.
- Stir.
I’m sure there is a named recipe out there for this awesome drink, but I don’t know what it is. So until we discover what that might be, we’re calling it the Ben Hanten, as was suggested by someone on Friend Feed. And if you want to make it double the awesome, add two dashes of Angostura bitters.
Update: I found something somewhat similar called the Bourbon Squash over at Trader Tiki. Do yourself a favor, though: skip the sugar, make the bourbon more of a feature, and add a few dashes of bitters. That’s the Ben Hanten.
Pomegranate Martini

We just received our first bottle of Pama today at Ben’s Brewing Co. Pama is a premium pomegranate liqueur and can be used to add flavor to martinis, margaritas, and mojitos. Oprah started the Pomegranate Martini craze, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s a good summer drink…. for the ladies! Sorry guys, you can’t drink these.
Here’s my recipe:
- If you don’t have frozen martini glasses, fill one with ice and water while you make the drink.
- Fill a shaker completely full of ice.
- Add 2 oz of Pama.
- Add 1 oz of orange-flavored vodka.
- Shake 10 times. Wake it up, don’t put it to sleep.
- Strain into your glass and serve with a lemon wedge.
There are a ton of recipes out there, but this is good and simple. Enjoy.
Time for Lynchburg Lemonade

Yesterday marked the first day of Summer; time to learn a new drink. The Lynchburg Lemonade always gets better as the temperature rises.
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- Add 1.5 oz of Jack Daniel’s.
- Add 1 oz triple sec.
- Add 1 oz Sweet & Sour; or even better squeeze 1 oz of fresh lemon juice and combine with a little sugar.
- Fill the rest of the glass with Sprite.
- Serve with a big lemon wedge.
Mint Chocolate Chip Martini

Here’s a good one for you.
- If you don’t have frozen martini glasses, fill one with ice and water while you make the drink.
- Fill a shaker completely full of ice.
- Add 1.5 oz of vanilla vodka.
- Add .75 oz of light or dark Creme de Cacao.
- Add .5 oz of chocolate liqueuer.
- Add .5 oz of peppermint schnapps.
- Shake 10 times. Wake it up, don’t put it to sleep.
- Decorate your martini glass with chocolate syrup.
- Strain into your glass and serve with a mint sprig.
Chocolate Cake Shooter
I just came across this video explaining how to make a chocolate cake shooter. It’s not me in the video, but we use the same recipe at Ben’s. Enjoy.
Lemon Drop Martini

By far the most popular martini at Ben’s is the Lemon Drop. Some customers are skeptical because the name suggests a very sour creation. But more than 90% will order another one. Learn this drink.
- If you don’t have frozen martini glasses, fill one with ice and water while you make the drink.
- Fill a shaker completely full of ice.
- Add 1.75 oz of citrus vodka.
- Add .5 oz of Triple Sec. Any brand will do.
- Add a splash of bottled Sweet & Sour. I use Finest Call.
- Add a liberal amount of regular sugar.
- Shake 10 times. Wake it up, don’t put it to sleep.
- Rim the martini glass with sugar.
- Strain into your glass and serve with a healthy lemon wedge.
If you don’t have citrus vodka, feel free to use any vodka. But, squeeze some fresh lemon wedges in the shaker to cut the liquor.
