Kid Rock has a new beer. Yaaaaaaay.

I can’t hardly wait. An American lager…. but with Kid Rock’s name attached!!  Ahhhhh SUUUUMM.

Detroit — Kid Rock’s Friday night show at Comerica Park was not just a massive concert event. It also was the soft launch of Kid Rock’s new appropriately titled Badass Beer.

“It’s delicious!” said Elizabeth Hussey, 25, of Shelby Township, after her first sip. She praised its “lean aftertaste” and “crisp, summery” savoriness. “It’s not heavy in your mouth; it’s light on your palate,” she said, comparing it to a Sam Adams summer lager.

Of course, Sam Adams doesn’t have a summer lager…  And I’m sure an American lager doesn’t taste like Summer Ale. But, she tried it, not me.

“I like it, it’s a workin’ man’s beer,” said Scott Carignan, 34, of Chesterfield Township.

But not so for Bill Watson, 59, of New Baltimore. “We’re here for Kid Rock, so of course we had to get a Kid Rock beer,” he said. But after a few sips, he wasn’t blown away. Would he pick up some from the store? “Probably not,” he said.

Study shows that beer is better than water after exercising

beer hydrate water

Ever wonder why cyclists and runner seem to hang around bars? They are rehydrating, of course.

According to a study in Granada, rehydration was “slightly better” in beer drinkers than those who were given only water after a grueling treadmill run to exhaustion in 104-degree heat.

Half the group was given water after the workouts, and the other half were given two pints of Spanish lager. The finding reportedly came after tests on 25 students over several months, with the following conclusions:

Researchers believe that it is the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly… [and] the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer’s carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

How to drink more alcohol and lose weight

Posted on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Beer, Liquor, Wine

calories liquor wine beer bud select 55

Can you lose weight and drink? What if you drink a lower calorie drink? Is liquor better than beer? How about wine? Is there zero-calorie alcohol? How important are calories in picking your drink? Alcohol and calories are always a huge discussion at my bar, and they seem to have attracted a lot of interest on this blog. Here is what you need to know about drinking and calories.

  • Don’t Drink Light Beer. You drink to have fun with friends and to enjoy a tasty beverage. Light beer is definitely not fun and because the alcohol percentage is lower, you end up drinking more. You’re also paying for extra water. Bud Light is one thing, but absolutely forget about MGD 64 or the upcoming Bud Select 55. MGD 64 is 2.8% alcohol, which means you have to drink almost two simultaneously to reach the alcohol and taste of a full-bodied beer.
  • Do Shots, Not Shooters. If you are reading this, I assume you are someone old enough to appreciate what goes into their body. When you were 21, it was OK to drink kamikaze shooters, Washington Apples, and Slippery Nipples. Now that you’re a little older, forget the extra calories that come from juices, creams, mixes and liqueurs. They contain no alcohol (or some in the case of liqueurs) and they will make you fat. Instead train your pallet to enjoy a chilled shot of Grey Goose, or be a man and drink a shot of whiskey. You’ll get more bang for your buck and less gut in front you.
  • Learn How to Drink Wine… The Right Way. I had a couple ladies at my bar recently ask about Slender, a fairly new wine that uses no added sugar. They called it “zero-calorie wine.” HA! There is no such thing in the alcohol world. Slender uses a zero-calorie artificial sweetener to add flavor. That doesn’t mean the juice contains no alcohol. Ladies and gents, it’s time to ditch the white zin, riesling, and anything that tastes like candy. Slow down, sip your wine and pay attention to aromas and flavors that aren’t like candied apples.
  • Drink a Ton of Water. Ever watch somebody drink a rum and coke? I see people all the time use the straw (amateur mistake) and suck down drinks in 5 – 10 minutes. They are dehydrated. Drinking water will make you feel more full, will slow down your drink, and will prevent a hangover. How about ordering a water with every drink? You may think this is annoying to a bartender… if you find one who is, stop giving him business. I’m interested in having customers who are good company for more than 30 minutes; water is the key to a fun night, looser jeans, and a better morning.
  • Know The Facts. Alcohol is alcohol is alcohol. It doesn’t matter if it comes from beer, wine or liquor. What matters is calories. If you are into counting carbs, that’s another issue. The bottom line, it doesn’t matter which of the three main styles of alcohol you choose — they all contain calories. Drinking alcohol will not help you lose weight, but drinking the right way will certainly hurt you less on your journey. Follow the above guidelines and you will make vast improvement in the quality of your consumption.

70000 beer cans

What if you had a renter who always paid on time and was quiet, but you discover that he may have a problem recycling the 70,000 or so Coors Light cans laying around the apartment?  What if this renter made tunnels through the cans so he could get to his bedroom?  Would you be mad?

Beer Myths

Beer Glass

Beer is a great thing. Not only do some people want to drink it, they want to talk about it. The problem is that a lot of beer stories are just plain false. Like when somebody says that India Pale Ales were brewed to survive the long journey from England to India, they have it wrong. IPAs were brewed with more ingredients so they could achieve a higher gravity and avoid taxes!

Do you trust that your tap beer is as labeled?

Posted on Thursday, June 18, 2009 in Beer, News

Lots of beer tapsI’ve heard of several instances of bars that will trick their customers into thinking they are drinking good beer, when in fact they were running something like Old Milwaukee through the lines. I know a local bar that told their customers they had their own private label beer. But, the manger told me it was, in fact, Busch Light.    Well, a casino in Atlantic City has been caught.  And fined.

Jersey casino fined $5,000 over mislabeled beer

Date: 06/17/2009 01:23 PM, WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Writer

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) – Ever wonder what the difference is between “tastes great” and “less filling?”

In one Atlantic City casino, it’s $5,000.

That’s how much the New Jersey Casino Control Commission fined Resorts Atlantic City on Wednesday for having mislabeled beer keg taps at one casino bar on two occasions last year.

In March, one tap was labeled “Miller Lite” and another one “Miller Genuine Draft.” But both taps were connected to a keg containing the light beer.

Regulators say a similar situation in August occurred in which taps labeled “Coors Original” and “Coors Light” were both dispensing the full-calorie, full-carb brew.

Resorts declined to comment.  Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
